The Lamrim is the synthesis of all of the teachings of the Buddha. It is the basis on which we can remove all our delusions not just in this life\, but forever. Furthermore\, to succeed in tantra\, one must have gained some Lamrim realizations.\nAs Lama Zopa used to say\, there can’t be a more worthwhile effort.\nWhat if together we made a real effort to gain actual realizations of the Lamrim path? This is not the same as what we all have done in the past: read and acquire intellectual knowledge. We have lots of information in our head\, but not that much has entered our hearts.\nThis series is specifically aimed towards developing realizations—unshakeable conviction of the validity of the path and internalizing the pith instructions. In the process it will lessen our attachment\, anger and other negative emotions and increase our virtuous attributes. \nEffort\nThe Lamrim topics are set forth and are designed to be followed in a particular sequence. The topics build on each other and reinforce each other; it’s hard to gain realizations on one without having done so on the ones before.\nTherefore\, to make real progress\, effort and consistency are prerequisites.\nIn this series\, each topic—guru devotion\, precious human rebirth and so on until wisdom—will be considered in a four- to six-week module.\nYou don’t have to attend every module (of course\, that’s ideal). However\, within each module it’s important that participants make a sincere effort to:\nattend the entirety of each module; and\ncontemplate and meditate every day in their private practice. It shouldn’t take more than forty-five minutes or so. \nStructure\nWe will cover one main topic in each module as mentioned above. Each module will last four to six weeks and there will be a 1.5 hour session (online and/or in-person) per week. Each session will be a combination of meditation and discussion (taking roughly equal amounts of time). The meditation and discussion will be on a particular point or points in the topic. The goal of each session is to clarify the points necessary to perform the meditations in private practice.\nPrivate practice during the week will be a combination of reading\, contemplation and meditation. The focus will be on those points alone that were covered in that week’s session. For meditation\, we will use the text and the meditation during the session as guides.\nOn the last session of a module\, each of us can lead a short meditation on the points covered in the topic (if one feels comfortable doing this.) Leading meditations is a really great way to learn how to meditate and find out whether it’s being effective. \nMaterials \nWe will use the following book:\nYangsi Rinpoche. Practicing the Path. Wisdom Publications\, 2003.\nYou can find this book here. \nWe will also use this Lama Tsongkhapa Guru Yoga. \n  URL:https://tnlsf.org/event/experiential-lamrim-karma/2025-01-05/ LOCATION:In-Person at The Buddhist Center\, 130 Rabbit Rd\, Santa Fe\, NM\, 87508\, United States CATEGORIES:SC4 Lamrim: The Sutra Path ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://tnlsf.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Shankha_Mitra.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Denver:20250105T100000 DTEND;TZID=America/Denver:20250105T113000 DTSTAMP:20250103T160731 CREATED:20240925T163102Z LAST-MODIFIED:20241231T165906Z UID:10007938-1736071200-1736076600@tnlsf.org SUMMARY:Cultivating Lasting Happiness: What Buddhism and Science Have to Say about It DESCRIPTION:Sundays Jan 5\, 2025 – Jan 26\, 2025 \nWhat is it that we all are pursuing? Do we succeed in it? Should we explore more carefully and wisely how to fulfill our deepest yearnings? How could we contribute to others’ happiness as well? \nWe will explore such questions from an experiential point of view\, using both scientific and Buddhist knowledge of the mind and meditation\, in a journey that may translate into increasing lasting happiness and a positive impact on oneself\, others\, and the world. The course “Cultivating lasting happiness: What Buddhism and science have to say about it” focuses on an exploration of what leads to dissatisfaction and suffering\, and what contributes to happiness for oneself and others. The fundamentals of meditation and mind training are introduced\, especially in the areas of establishing a meaningful direction in life\, balancing the mind with equanimity and a caring attitude\, and nurturing warmheartedness and wisdom drawn from the Buddhist tradition. It is complemented by references to current scientific understanding on our nervous system\, values\, subjective well-being\, neuroplasticity and altruism. \nThe Journey “Cultivating Lasting Happiness” gradually unfolds as a journey along different topics: \n1. ‘A Universal Need’ explores the common ground that we all want to find happiness and overcome suffering and presents initial techniques to balance body and mind. \n2. ‘Are We Pursuing Happiness in the Best Way?’ is an initial exploration of the Buddhist Four Truths and a suggestion to probe into common ways to pursue happiness—are we succeeding? \n3. ‘Following the Scent of Lasting Happiness’ encourages us to establish meaningful directions and to find ways to cultivate lasting happiness and activate our potential. \n4. ‘Meditation and Mind Training’ presents tools for doing so. \n5. ‘Wisdom and Warmheartedness’ as a source of lasting happiness presents tools to cultivate the fundamental qualities of warmheartedness and wisdom and invites us to explore their contribution to our own and others’ happiness. \n6. ‘Enhancing Wisdom and Warmheartedness’ further explores these fundamental qualities. \n  \nOpen door\, open heart – Buddhist or not\, member or not\, all are welcome anytime with optional donations\, no commitments or hidden fees. Join us in-person or via Zoom. Drop-ins are always welcome. Stress and anxiety can arise\, leaving us feeling ungrounded and reactive. Tibetan Buddhism offers effective teachings and practical techniques to help us navigate these challenges\, build inner resilience\, and find a sense of peace even in the midst of adversity. \nThis course is designed to guide students through Buddhist approaches to managing stress and anxiety\, drawing on powerful teachings that address the root causes of our suffering. We will explore essential concepts\, including the nature of attachment and aversion\, how our habitual ways of reacting to difficulties can create additional pain\, and how shifting our perspective can transform challenging situations into opportunities for growth. \nParticipants will learn about key practices\, that help to calm the mind\, reduce reactivity\, and create space for wise\, compassionate responses to whatever arises. In addition\, we will introduce techniques from mind training (lojong) that are specifically aimed at reframing difficult circumstances\, allowing us to meet them with greater equanimity and openness. \nThrough teachings\, guided meditation\, and practical exercises\, this course will provide students with tools to approach stress and anxiety from a Buddhist perspective\, helping them cultivate a mind that remains calm and stable regardless of external conditions. By learning to let go of rigid expectations and embracing a more flexible\, accepting attitude\, participants can develop an inner strength that supports them. \nThis course is open to all levels of students\, whether new to Buddhist practice or experienced practitioners looking to deepen their approach to navigating difficulties. By the end of this course\, participants will have a toolkit of Buddhist practices and perspectives that can help them face life’s challenges with greater resilience\, patience\, and peace. Thus\, in order to achieve more lasting peace and wellbeing\, it is essential to know how our minds function and to increase our awareness of the contents of our minds\, particularly through understanding the salutary states that are ideal to foster and identifying the unwholesome ones that can be reduced and eventually eliminated. In this course\, we will investigate Buddhist psychology using the basic teachings from the traditional study of lo-rig\, “mind and cognition”\, but we will do so particularly with an approach geared toward practicality and easy application in our daily lives. \nCourse Materials \nOpen door\, open heart – Buddhist or not\, member or not\, all are welcome anytime with optional donations\, no commitments or hidden fees. Join us in-person or via Zoom. Drop-ins are always welcome.
